To open a new window OR not to open a new window?

When viewing an image gallery, what is your opinion when the image is opened in its own windows rather than just opening in the site�s main window?

Its easier if it opens in the same window, so I can just go back and don't need to close the window.

Yeah! The only thing I hate is trying to open any javascript window in a new tab, unknowingly while broswing, and then when finally reaching it, seeing a blank window.
