How to create VM instance Backup to an external drive

Hi guys,

So I have 4 VM instances hosted on my server. I am using VMware V-sphere to host and manage these instances and they are all operating fine. However, I need to find out how I can create/configure a copy/backup of one of the VMs. The VM in this case is a file server and I would like to extend the copy to an additional drive outside the server; most preferably to an external drive. I can attach the external drive to the server, but I am unable to see the external drive through the VM. This means that I am not therefore able to configure automatic backup.

Anyone with such an issue before? share your thoughts please.

You need to pass through the external drive to the VM with VMTools.

I have VMware tools installed but I do not know how to go about the process, I am managing the VMs from my browser.
If possible please attach snaps.
