But Linux isn't a business it's some free random pile of **** built by hippie pot smoking basement nerds.
Okay so i'm not a Linux fan.
Basically Apple were masters. They took Linux and decided to charge for it
Linux is definitely a business. RHEL, Solaris OpenStack, Ubntu's implementations of it, etc. Some charge for the software, some charge just for the enterprise support.
Your beloved Mac OS shares the same roots as Linux. Same with your iPhone and your Android phone.
Apple isn't charging for Linux. They're charging for their overlying changes to the Unix base. The UI, the apps, etc.

IMO it's so they don't have a fragmented market, and we don't have another apocalypse for Win7 like there was for XP. People will be more likely to upgrade if it's free.Yeah Win10 isn't sub based. Free upgrades and you get to keep the license for all 7/8 users.
Their main reason? Windows 7 doesn't have the Windows App Store and it would look weird to just give Windows 7 users free Win10 and leave Win8 users in the dust

Although admittedly it's a bit different. OS X is nothing to Apple w/r to revenue. They probably made it free because it's easier to do that than charging for it. Whereas for Microsoft it is one of their major revenue generators. It's kind of like Apple saying here, have a free iPod.
Apple is a consumer hardware company - Microsoft is a consumer/business software company. Of course MS is gonna have been charging for software for most of its life

Is anybody running Win 10 Beta now?
I have a partition on my laptop with it installed natively. Though I made the mistake of installing the UK version rather than US, so I don't get to try out Cortana.
Yes, been running it since it was first made available in Oct of last year.
was that the beta or TR...or they're both the same?
