Definitive way to share your Internet connection through Windows Vista.

This is for all the people who seem to be having problems setting up or trouble shooting Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) with windows

Vista. Though this should also work when CONNECTING to other flavours of windows.

* NOTE TO ALL TECH HEADS * I am a novice when it comes to networking, but after 2 days of research this is a guide most other novices

should be able to follow to get ICS working and/or to basic trouble shoot, hence the over simplified explanation, so give me a break :)

Follow these steps exactly and you should have ICS and clear any problems you have come across.Assuming you have SERVICE PACK 2

installed for Windows Vista.

To save time, LC= Left click, RC= Right click, NSC=Network Sharing Centre, ICS= Internet connection Sharing

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steps to be taken on the computer that has Vista and the Internet connection.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Reboot windows.

2. LC start button ( The windows Icon at the bottom left of your taskbar )

3. RC Network, this is in the right hand column and choose properties. You can also RC the small Internet icon that looks like either 1

or 2 monitors to the right of the task bar and choose NSC.

4. LC Manage network connections in the left hand column.

5. RC the connection that gives you Internet and select disconnect.

6. RC the same connection and select delete. This will clear any settings and set the connection to default when restarted.

7. Exit any program that you use to start your Internet. Pull Any cables out that connect you.

8. Restart your Internet, ie , start the program that came with your Internet or plug all the cables back in. A new connection will be

made at this point with default settings and a window should pop up with Vista asking you what kind of a connection this is, Home,

Work, or public. Check it is working by loading any Internet page up. Close the browser.

9. Assuming you are sharing at home, LC Home. You may need to confirm this if you have User account control enabled.

10. You should still have the network connections window open where an icon for the new Internet connection has appeared. (The same as

the one you deleted)

11. Move back to the NSC window you should still have open and LC Set up a connection or network which is in the left hand column.

12. LC set up a wireless ad Hoc ( computer to computer ) network.

13. Name your new network in the top box and put a password in the bottom box, check the "save this network" box. LC next.

14. Windows will begin to set up your network. When complete a new window will appear telling you so with a recommendation at the

bottom of the window to "TURN ON INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING", click this. Close the window after it has confirmed the connection has

been enabled.

15. Return to the Network connections window which should still be open. RC the connection to the Internet and select properties.

16. Select the sharing tab at the top of the properties window and confirm the top check box for Internet connection sharing is

enabled.

17. Still in the same window, select the settings which is in the middle right of the window. In the new window that opens check the

"FTP server" box, when you do this a new window will open, just press ok. Do the same for "Secure webserver" (HTTPS) and Web Server

(HTTP) boxes. Click ok, the window will close click ok again in the Properties window to close.

18. You will be informed that the connection to the Internet is open so the changes will be made next time you connect to the Internet,

so disconnect from the Internet and reconnect.

---------------------------------------------------------
Move to the other computer, the one that has no Internet.
---------------------------------------------------------

19. LC Start, ( The windows Icon at the bottom left of your taskbar ), then LC "Connect To" in the right hand column of the start menu

you just opened and then LC the new connection you just made. Click "Home" on the new "Home, Work, Public" window that will open and

type in the password you made.

----------------------------
return to the first computer
----------------------------

20. Click "Home" on the new "Home, Work, Public" window.

You Should now both have Internet.

IMPORTANT TROUBLE SHOOTING FOR ICS and ad hoc networks.
-------------------------------------------------------

If you share your Internet connection on an ad hoc network, ICS will be disabled if:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You disconnect from the ad hoc network.

You create a new ad hoc network without disconnecting from the ad hoc network for which you enabled ICS.

You log off and then log back on (without disconnecting from the ad hoc network).

Do any of the above and you may have to start again from the VERY BEGINNING to avoid any problems.

Further Trouble shooting I have found on other websites.
-------------------------------------

You MAY need to check that the network you created between the two computers are set to obtain an IP automatically.

To do this,

1. LC Start

2. RC Network and choose properties.

3. RC the network connection that you are using, the connection the two computers are connected to , not the connection to the

Internet, and choose properties.

4. LC Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and select properties.

5. Make sure the "Obtain the Ip address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server addresses automatically" are selected, do this on both

computers.

I hope this helps anyone having problems.
