Also check and see if you have lots of dust clogging up your system. Use compressed air or something and blow out the fans and such. Heat can cause that problem.

check to see if there are any updates to the sound card that you have. The cable could be messed up or the input on the reciever could be messed up for just this input. all though those are both unlikely.

try and reset the BIOS once the drive is already plugged in. make sure you have power to it as well

The bottom should be perfectly flat, if it is not I think the heat will not dissapate very well, so the method is the same as normal.

Id say there is almost no way to get at that data with out a really good recovery program. Not sure what that would be off the top of my head, but the ones that can do it probably are not free.
