    Motherboard will only matter if you plan to run 2 cards at any point in time. Since you have an 8800 you have a pci-e x16 slot. What psu do you have as it may be your only limiting factor?

    Have you checked the cable from the computer to the monitor on both ends? Generally you get that message when there is no signal to the monitor. You can try another monitor as well.

    I used both. Gnome was hard at first to work with, but found it easier after i figured out the nooks and crannies. KDE is alright but honestly i find Gnome to be better.

    Try installing the latest drivers for your graphics card. If that doesn't work, you'll probably just have to reinstall the game and use only the 140 patch.
