I have a Win XP Pro box that suddenly stopped running explorer.exe thus there are NO icons, START menu, or Task Bar. Running explorer.exe from Task Manager does nothing. Booting in SAFE MODE produces the same thing. Booting in SELECTIVE STARTUP does nothing. Here are some other things I've done:
1) Making sure Userinit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\userinit.exe, in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Currentversion\Winlogon
2) Verified no sub key explorer.exe in ""\Image File Execution Options
3) NoDesktop=hex:00,00,00,00 is not enabled in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\Explorer
4) explorer.exe DOES exist in C:\WINDOWS\
5) Shell=explorer.exe in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
6) Copied explorer.exe from XP Pro CD to C:\WINDOWS\
7) chkdsk c: /f /r
8) sfc /scannow ( no issues )
9) MalwareBytes, AVG, HijackThis with latest scan engine and definitions show no malware/virii.
I'm stumped, any thoughts? This is a XP Pro box SP3 with all other critical updates completed.
