Default a word program for windows vista 64 bit?

I have windows vista 64 bit and would like to have a word processing program or whatever it's called. something basic. when I save a word perfect or word document on my puter I can't open the file. All I have is wordpad and notepad.
I saw that microsoft has WORKS 9.0 for vista. Dell computers come whith WORKS 8.5 on a Vista machine but microsofts website says that is for XP. 8.5 is
10 dollars and 9.0 is $40. Just looking for a cheap or free program that I could open word or wordperfect documents up in.

Open Office? It's freeware and opens all MSOffice documents.
