Default WindowsXP Error

My roomates laptop booted up this a.m with this message...

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

{Windows root\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.
________________________________________

What can I do////im fairly literate.

Insert the XP CD and copy the file from the CD to the Hard Drive in the Recovery Console. Best option.

Could also do a repair install of XP if you weren't familiar with the command prompt.

So I not good at the command prompt I would rather do thru the xp cd

I insert disk run recovery thru the disk and then restart

This will not wipe hard drive correct???

Anything I should note? Or should this be a easy


One last thing how could this happen??

IT can not be explain how it happened. There is so much that varies system to system that there is never a real answer. It could have been a update to Windows, driver, software. Could have been something that you installed, uninstalled. Who knows.

We cant answer cause we dont know anything about your system. What you were doing before it happened. What you have running, what you have installed.

PC's it isnt as cut and dry as it happend cause of ____. there are a million and 1 factors as to why it could happen.

As for the Repair install.

I wish that Somebody could stimulate this error in virtual windows so I can show everybody an easier fix
