| Windows XP stupidity Ok so I order about 3 years back a copy of WinXP from Newegg. I never got around to using it until today when my parts come in and I put my build together. So everything fit like a glove, 30 min down the road the computer fired up on first try and everything operating at ideal temps, no DOA's, nothing. I insert my OS and it starts loading and I accept the TOS and away it goes, then it stops. It says I needed a previous Windows installment.
So with that being said I look down and I had bought an "Upgrade" windows XP. So is there anyway around this or am I going to have a lighter wallet? |

| Re: Windows XP stupidity No there's nothing you can do. You'll have to install a previous legit version of Windows to upgrade to if you have one laying around, if you don't wanna have to buy a OEM or Retail version.

| You can use Norton Ghost (or something similar, I think there are Open Source imaging apps) to copy your old PC and then just dump it on the new one.
I've used Ghost at both of my most recent IT jobs and it's brilliant - you only have to do a typical XP install once and then you "Ghost" your ready machine - in fact I named our corporate ghost image with all our software pre-installed as "HotNReady", you just drop the image on a machine which only takes like 5 minutes and then you join it to the domain, and you've got a new machine ready to go in 10 minutes flat (that includes the dozen applications we use) |

| Re: Windows XP stupidity Ghosting does not make it legal. In fact that is still very much illegal. Because it is still the same license that was in use on the other PC. Which by definition of the TOS and EULA of Windows makes it illegal.
If you are using Corporate Serials that is a different story, but for home users that is very much illegal cause the serials are not to be transfered in that way.

they just made xp so you had to have to activate it.
