Default Windows says product key ain't right

I wanted to try to perform a repair on Windows. The guy I bought my comp from didn't send the disk (or my speakers, or SLI bridge...). So, I have a Windows XP Pro disk I bought at a yard sale (really, no kidding) that doesn't have a key with it (just a disk).

I used Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to pull up my keycode, wrote it down, checked it thrice. popped in the disk, clicked upgrade (I have XP Home). It asked for my keycode, and I type it in. Windows says it ain't right. So I type it again... same thing. And again.

So, what's the deal here? According to Microsoft's authentication, my Windows is valid, so the key is good.

What gives?

I would suspect the program, Magical Jelly Bean, as the fault... have you tried any other key finders to test that one?

XP PRO and Home uses different code combinations. Even if it does work, MS will catch up with you and say "you stole from us."

You don't need a key to do a repair, any Windows XP cd would work on any computer running XP.

But you would definitely need a XP Pro key to upgrade though.

Trotter, why didn't you try RockXP to find the serial for the "yard sale" XP disk?

the are about 30 different version of xp. different ones require different keys. if you knew the key to the one at the yard sale, you could use it, then change back to your original key at activation. xp oem will recognize most keys (home oem will recognize most homes, pro oem will recognize pros, but pro will never recognize home and vice versa)

here are the different versions of xp VLK = volume = corporate. this isn't counting gateway, dell, hp, ibm, sony, etc, XP disc
