Default Windows Mail can't send from certain locations

I'm having a problem with Windows Mail not being able to send emails from different locations. I've recently moved back in at college, and am on the dorm's internet (it uses Resnet, I don't know if this makes a difference) and it just won't work. I could send fine from Windows Mail from my house, so I know the settings are right. I didn't change anything, and I had this problem last year as well.

I can send emails directly from my email account just fine, but Windows Mail gives me this error:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Test', Account: 'crimson.ua.edu', Server: 'smtp.gmail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I've tried fooling around with a few settings, and double checked to make sure everything was as it should be. Still no luck. Any ideas?

(btw I use Avast! but I seriously doubt it's the culprit seeing as the problem is location based)

Ask your college IT department. They've probably blocked certain ports on their network and you will have to use a different port for sending and receiving.

Alright, thanks. I was hoping it wouldn't come to that.

You could try to adjust the SMTP port from 465 to Port 587 and see if that helps. That is another port that GMail can use to send out as well. Maybe that one isnt blocked.

Depending on the ISP of the school it could require you relay the mail off their mail servers. I know here in NY cablevision will not allow mail to flow unless you use their mail server as the outgoing smtp address. Your school could have a similar configuration. Let us know your results.

Changing the SMTP port was a no go. I've emailed the IT people, and I'll let yall know when/if I hear back from them.

Ah, got it now. The smtp server is different on campus than what the instructions say.
