Default Windows Dreamscene Crash

My computer specifications are as follows:

Intel corei7 2.67ghz oc'ed to 3.0ghz
MSI Eclipse X58
Radeon HD 3850

Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit edition

The only things i think would matter

After installing dreamscene for the first time i loved it, it worked properly as it should, but it only came with 1 content video, so i downloaded the content packs from windows update, after installing when i view the content through the background selection in the control panel, my computer freezes. Thinking this was a codec problem i installed divx codec... nothing.

I tried to delete the additional content by browsing to the location "C:\Windows\Web\%Dreamscene Content%

As soon as i viewed the contents of "C:\Windows\Web", basically when vista tried to render the thumbnail it froze and i hit the reset button.

So now i uninstalled the dreamscene update and the content updates to remove the folder.

Does anyone know why this is happening, or what I can do to fix it?

Thank you.

When I use an animated background, I use Deskscapes from Stardock, not Dreamscene. This mainly because there are all kinds of .dream files readily available from WinCustomize: Dream Gallery with about anything to suit your taste. Considering that I am on an older rig, I don't run it very often.

It could possibly be a codec problem. It would depend on the video loop you were using. I use |MG| Vista Codec Package 5.1.5 Final and |MG| Vista Codec x64 Components 1.7.2 Final for my codecs.

The default codecs from Vista should handle the DS content out of box, but if not try the k-lite codec pack those seem to work well with all windows versions just be sure to uninstall the Divx codec, the k-lite will have all the codecs you need. I always just use the default settings when installing.

the dream scene crashes on occasion for me as well, just a bug really.. its windows.. lol

Would this work on a 64bit machine?

Yes KLite codec packs work on 32 Bit and 64 Bit.

The set I posted also works on 64-bit, as I use them.

Deskcapes for any other version of Vista is not free, but it is free for Ultimate. Stardock.com - Your Edge In Software
