Default Windows 98 Programs to install.

At my school we are doing a project that is giving computers to families that need computers but don't have enough money to afford to buy one. Our school district keeps up with technology and we have decided to give away about 100 computers. One of the big problems we are facing is what are good programs to run on a computer that will be running Windows 98? (We have already tried Ubuntu 7.04 but it was too slow and would frustrate the users) Anyways does anyone know a good list of legal free programs that we can install on the computer.

They are Dell GX1's and GX2's each computer has about a 10-20 and possibly some 40GB hard drives, we are hoping to get about 128MB of RAM.

One of the tech guys at my Vocational school (not my tech teacher though)told me about some kind of linux that we can get that has been made for low amounts of RAM but I have little experience with linux but I'm pretty sure it would be much better then 98.

Thanks

First i would say DSL or Puppy Linux.

Windows 98 hasnt been patched. It has not gotten the DNS patch or the latest patch that allows a machine to be taken over with just a simple code execution.

Windows 98 has not been updated in over 2 years now. It really should NOT be used in any way shape or form. Give them a really small distro of Linux instead. At least then if they use the net they will have some security. Better than the none IE4 will give them and Windows 98.

DSL is Debian based like Ubuntu. So that would probably be easier to use since that is a much more known base for Linux and Puppy which is its own base.

I tried to load up xubuntu to see what it was like in Windows XP x64 PRO using the x64 edition of virtual PC and I got an error that said "An unrecoverable processor error has been encountered"

Is this because ubuntu does not support my CPU? I tried DSL and it worked fine. I also cant use ubuntu when I try to use it on my PC without WVM... any suggestions?

Could just be something with Xubuntu. I have never tried that interface. XFCE is what it is based off of so i couldnt even start to answer questions about it. But I think that error might have something to do with VM. Have you tried Ubuntu? If you get the same error then it will just be the VM.

Ubuntu probably just had a brain fart, If DSL supports it there is no way in **** that ubuntu wont support it.
