Angry Windows 98 - Out of Control!

All right guys, I'm so computer illiterate so be gentle with me! I'm still running a computer with Windows 98 (I know... its time for a new one.) and it just keeps getting worse and worse. Every day it seems to run slower. Yesterday, I opened my windows file to find there there are like 8,000 files in it!? :amazed: I'm assuming that is not normal. So is there anything I can do to see what files are needed and which ones are not?

I have norton antivirus... but I really never use it for much. Could it help?

Also, here is my HJT log... just in case.

I would suggest for starters to run adaware or something like to clean off the unneeded garbage. then is you are uising systemworks from norton do the disk cleanup. Remember to delete all the temporary internet files, Right click the icon on the desktop and go to porperties, then to delte temp... files.
You should also defrag the disk as that will help speed things up a bit.

Try loading Spybot Search & Destroy. Update, and run that to get rid of some of the spyware and adware. As a backup to that you can run Ad-Aware, also.

Update your Norton Anti-virus, if your update period hasn't expired. If it has, run one of the free ones. I'll search for a post that has links to multiple options.

When was the last time you defragmented your computer? If it hasn't been run in a long time, go ahead and run it.

Edit: Inaris beat me to it.

Follow this link. There's freeware antivirus programs if your update subscription to Norton's has run out.

goto:

if your antivirus is out of date. Its free and will remove any viruses it finds. Since its web based, it is very up to date. Reason its free is because they have a purchase only version for pre-detection. This is for after its infected. Make sure to have it clean any viruses it finds and note any that can not be cleaned for manual removal.

try to remove the startup item from the msconfig ... click start button, Run and type msconfig.. goto startup tab and uncheck all of the items in the list and click ok.... restart your machine and you will find that your system will boot fast and applications runs faster. !!
