In all honesty what the UAC is actually for is not to protect you from malware so much is it is to prevent multi user computers from being mucked up by little Johnny and suzy from installing garbadge to the family PC.. it's really quite redundent for single user pc's.

| Re: Is Windows 7 worth it? No i am not on the fence about it. The fact is that i am a TESTER. So i have to TEST EVERY SITUATION. that means with AND without UAC on. I wouldnt be a good tester and beta testing as much as i am if i didnt do a through job now would I?
What good would it do me to test only 1 aspect? It would do me no good what so ever. I have to test applications in a environment with and without UAC to see how they react, or if they react differently. This is what sets apart a good produc tester from someone who just wants the latest product jsut to be part of the "in" crowd.
UAC = User Account Control.
It is to help Prevent drive by installations of product (Guess what that is????) as well as making sure that actions such as modification of files is not done by unauthorized people. (Hey guess what also does that?)
So i see absolutely NOTHING about UAC that doesnt help protect against malware. As everything it does do, can be done by malware.

A good tester will do anything they can to make something NOT work. That way, if everything works fine despite all of your trials, you know you've tested a product to the max.

. | See the Winkie at the end? that means i was just messin with you.. simmer down..
I'm sure there are some malware that the UAC can prevent, I however have not had that moment where the UAC went off and I said "ah ha!! I caught you!" it was usually more like a frustrated "yes I want to install this app" and then on other occasions the POW "OMG! I have a virus..? "

| Re: Is Windows 7 worth it? Sorry if my posts seemed a bit on edge. They are not meant to be as such. I am just trying to present the facts from both sides. Being a user that does both, i can see the benefits of using it. At the same time, even when i am there is very little interaction that i have gotten. Mostly cause even when i go to shady sites to test it, my browsers block the bad stuff anyways. I have only once gotten a notice from something downloading.
The main problem is what you said Hampton. Users get so fed up with seeing the pop up that they dont bother to read what it is and just click Okay only to find out that they shouldnt have. So in essence it defeats UAC altogether. for average users, by all means leave it on. More so for a home PC. But for a power user or a technical user, UAC doesnt offer any advantages since they already know how to protect themselves.
I just dont want to see people give advice to disable it without knowing if the person is technical enough to know how to stay protected. It is a double edged sword in that aspect as if they are not technical it could cause issues for them. But if they are tachnical you are kinda insulting them by telling them to leave it on. It is a no win situation either way. So i just say leave it on and offer the thread as a option to turn it off at their own risk.
