Default New Window/ Slow

Hi all.

I have Windows 7 RC. I was starting to go through the Windows 7 Thread & FAQ/ Sticky to see if anyone else came across this issue I have, and even searched the forum; didn't find anything.

If I have the Internet Explorer browser open, and I right-click on a link, and then from the pop-up menu I choose "Open in New Window" and left-click on it............there is a VERY long pause before that new window will open up.

And I don't mean just because I'm impatient I've tried doing a "count", and I think I'm getting up to ten seconds. I know I know.......maybe that does make me sound like an impatient fool :o

Just as a test I tried disabling the Windows firewall and also disabling Kaspersky anti-virus; but no, still sloooooooooow.

Any ideas on what could be causing this slow response time? I checked the add-ons and there doesn't seem to be anything bizarre in there, just "the usual", the same stuff that's in my other OS of Win XP Pro, and when I open a separate window in there, BAM, it opens instantaneously

Thanks for any suggestions.
Pez

P.S. And oh......if you know the answer to this "slowness", maybe you can help with this, too: When the new window opens, how do I get it to always open up full-screen? Doesn't it have something to do with clicking and dragging the edges/ sides and not just clicking the maximize button?

That is normal behavior for the pause. This has been researched and discussed many, many, many times. Jsut some systems have the pause while others dont. My system i get about a 3-5 second pause. this was even noted by some people such as Mary Jo Foley, Paul Thurrott and more who are well known Microsoft people. It is just something that happens with some installs and updates. No one can explain it.

To get full screen, open the browser and hit F11 twice. After you do that everytime you open the browser or explorer window it should open to the same way you want it to. It wont open in the same exact spot if you have a explorer window already open. Cant open 2 windows in the same place at the same time. Windows is funky like that.

Interesting. the same issue that was posted above now has a fix.

IEBlog : How to make IE open new tabs faster

The IE Team seems to have found out what is causing it and how to fix it.

Win RTM Bits Release info

OEMs: Two days after RTM

ISVs and IHV partners: August 6 (downloadable via Microsoft Connect or MSDN)

Microsoft Gold certified resellers: August 16 (downloadable from the partner portal in English only); October 1 (other language)

TechNet subscribers: August 6 (English only); October 1 (other languages)

MSDN subscribers: August 6 (English only); October 1 (other languages)

Microsoft “Action Pack” subscribers: August 23 (English only); October 1 (remaining languages)

Volume licensees with existing Software Assurance license: August 7 (downloadable from the Volume License Service Center in English); a couple of weeks after that for other languages. (So my original post on when business users would get Windows 7 wasn’t really wrong, after all. Glad we cleared that up. Not!)

Volume licensees without a Software Assurance license: September 1 (downloadable from the Volume License Service Center)

Consumers: General availability begins October 22. Retailers and OEMs will be offering new systems preloaded with Windows 7 and copies of Windows 7 at retail on that day.

Source: Mary Jo Foley via Windows 7 Blog

Also let it be known now, there is no upgrade from RC to RTM.

Quote:
Users of Windows 7 pre-RTM development milestones will not be able to perform in place upgrades to the gold release of the operating system, according to Microsoft. The Redmond company has made available for download the Windows 7 Upgrade Paths, a resource designed to provide information on the “supported and unsupported upgrade paths for editions of the Windows 7 operating system.”
So you should find out now from the provided documentation what upgrade paths are available for you.

Windows 7 Has Been Released to Manufacturing

Build 7600 is the RTM Build. Specifically, it’s build 7600.16385 that is the RTM version of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Along with Win7 Server 2008R2 has also been RTM'd. There is some more info and a special thank you to people who tested on the Windows 7 blog.

Win 7 RTM Gets Lots of Intel Love

If you are wondering why guys like me are seeing some really good scaling on Intel Core i7 processors with Windows 7, here are some of the reasons why. Glad to see these guys talking more about collaboration.

Working with Intel, Microsoft implemented a new feature called SMT parking, which added support for the Windows 7 scheduler for Intel Hyper-threading Technology, enabling better performance on hyper-threaded, multi-core Intel processors. This will help users get the maximum benefit from multi-tasking. Also, Intel and Microsoft jointly analyzed the boot/shutdown/sleep/resume times on Intel platforms during the development of Windows 7 to identify opportunities to optimize Intel drivers and BIOS as well as Windows 7. Our mutual goal was to provide the most responsive compute experience possible. Another key part of the performance and responsiveness was our collaboration to optimize Intel Solid State Drive technology for Windows 7.

Default Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ

What would be the best thing for a guy to buy if he wants to install Windows 7 on 10 computers?
I want either Windows 7: Ultimate(preferred) or Windows 7: Professional, not Home Edition.

And what is the difference between Volume Licensing with Software Assurance and without it?

Thanks,

Well your best bet would most definitely be to get the Volume License. As for what the difference is you would have to contact Microsoft to see what the Software Assurance program entails. It may only be available to partners. That is something that Microsoft hasnt disclosed yet.

Just as i thought. It is only available to Microsoft Partners. BetaNews has some details on it.
