| Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ I've got 2 routers and a switch on my network. Works fine for me - I just had to set the IP address of the second router to something different
coaxial cable -> router/modem -> WRT54GL/Tomato -> 8-port gigabit switch -> My PC (with Windows 7)
The WRT54GL + Tomato is much better than the first modem + router (it has things like packet prioritisation, QOS, among lots of other things), which is why I use it
I want to replace the modem/router with a motorolla surfboard SB5100 which I already have though, because it's much more reliable than the modem/router that Optus gave us. But Optus would need to add the MAC address + serial number of it for it to work.

| Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ I LOVE 7 But IT'S NETWORK setting it driveng me crazy. I had to manually change everything to Everyone Read/Write just to access another computer's files. I'm forgetting about homegroup for the moment. maybe it don't like my router.

| Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ Windows Vista gives me a hard time because it seems that it isnt as optimized as Windows XP, i think. I want Windows 7 so badly. I'm looking into getting Windows Vista Business SP1 64-bit OEM with a free ticket to Windows 7 Professional along with a WD Caviar Black 640GB 7200rpm HDD very soon.

| Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ Comparing Mac OS to Windows is like comparing a Honda Civic to a Dodge Charger. They are totally different types of cars and parts. People will tell you something for one or the other and vice versa. Use what YOU like. Apple die hards will tell you that OS X is the best thing since sliced bread. Windows users will laugh and call them liars.
If you want just take a gander at the OS X area for some input. Saxon, Hikaricloud and a few others have/had Macs and they have made their feelings known.
As for how much better it is. This whole topic has a ton of posts about it. Please read the thread. Yeah it is long but simply put, it isnt worth us saying it over and over and over and over and over again when it is already available.

| Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ I felt the need to share two settings I found in Windows 7 that I am absolutely in love with.
These settings may or may not have been available in Vista, but we skipped Vista at work so I'm not too sure if these things were there.
Scheduling options in disk defragmenter + automatically delete local user profiles that are a certain number of days old.
These two settings are TREMENDOUS for people who need to manage several hundred computers. Typically 2 or 3 times a year I have to defrag computers in the labs and delete the user profiles, because it seems enough students log in to different computers in the labs to completely max out hard drive space. This feature will be a huge help, because it will only delete the older profiles that haven't been used - therefore leaving the more recent profiles for students who may access the labs frequently, so that way their profile never has to be re-generated. Although this only shaves a few seconds off of their log in time, it still shaves hours of work for me. Along with disk defragmenter, because defragmenting is something I don't do often at home because I don't run my computer in to the ground as much as the computers at work are used.
Nice job, 7.

| Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ Well the thing is this. With Vista and Win7, they do defrag themselves on a regular basis. So defragging Vista and Win7 is not such a major priority as it was in XP. There are talks of this all over the net. Quote:
How does Vista compare to XP?
Well for one, the entire operating system is indexed. This means that the search capabilities have been vastly improved. Not to mention, when you install a program the operating system actually knows where the files are. This is because unlike XP, you don't have to defrag Vista. Vista actually defrags itself automatically keeping files in order.
| source
That is just one of many topics of the sort on the net. that is one of the added benefits. Is it perfect? by no means. But it does a much better job by default than running Defrag on a regular basis. Since i started using Vista and now with Win7 i have yet to run Defrag of any kind. Even when checking with software like Defraggler my disks are at most 20% fragmented. Which is no bad given the amount of installing, uninstalling, video conversions and other things i do on my machine on a regular basis.
I did not know of the profile feature. Thanks for that bit of info!

| Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ Final Release of Windows XP Mode Coming Soon
Brandon LeBlanc used the Windows Team Blog today to announce that Windows XP Mode will be available via the Microsoft Download Center on October 22nd. Thanks to everyone’s feedback, we’re happy to announce that Windows XP Mode has RTM’d today. We expect to make the final release of Windows XP Mode available via the Microsoft Download Center on October 22nd. OEMs will be able to offer Windows XP Mode on their PCs based on their manufacturing schedules. |
