Default Why isn't Windows Vista SP2 automatic?

Bought a laptop two weeks ago. Vista Premium. So Windows Updates did the latest updates. And now I have Windows Vista SP1.

But then I read there's a SP2 released a few months ago. Why didn't my system automatically download it from Microsoft? I searched for it in updates but it wasn't there. Is there a reason? Should I search for it and download it myself or leave my system alone and wait for Microsoft to suggest the download for me.

Just being overly cautious. Don't want to mess up a new system.

Thanks.

Well first i would ask why SP2 did come installed by default. Then i would read around and see that there is a known issue with Vista SP2 64 Bit and Intel systems. Then i would check my specs to see if they fall under that category.

SP2 is automatic. If your 2 week old system didnt come with it is a big red flag there. It has been out for more than enough time to be installed on pre-built machines.

I don't know now. Is it possible I install SP1 over SP2 by mistake? I really don't know.....

I'm getting the free upgrade to Windows 7 anyway, maybe I'll just ignore it and wait for 7. Hopefully, that will install properly and I'll just go from there.

No it is not possible to install SP1 over SP2. Again if you have a Intel CPU and Vista 64 Bit installed it could be that your system falls into the group that has a conflict with SP2 which is why it isnt showing.

No it has a AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core.

You said Vista 64 bit? What does that even mean? And how do I know if I have that or something else? Where do I check?

Sorry if dumb questions.....

Just found it I think. It says 32 bit Operating System. ????

If it has An AMD CPU then it doesnt matter either way what version you use. If you want to know about what 32 Bit or 64 Bit is there are topics in the Read First thread.

To find out for sure:

Start>run>winver

or

Start> right click on Computer>Properties

So the choice is yours. Get it yourself and install it or dont.

Yes, it says 32 bit.

Well, if I'm getting the Win7 upgrade anyway, what do you recommend? I guess I'll just leave it alone, unless you think its better to upgrade with Vista SP2 in place?

Otherwise, I'll just leave it.

Thanks.

I cant recommend anything. I havent done a OS upgrade since Windows 95. I always do fresh installs. So my recommendation wont hold much weight since i dont go through the process myself.

Do what you are comfortable doing.
