Default Where to take a computer to restore it?

Hi,

Recently I installed some program that seemed to have a virus and now my computer is in dire shape.

-It will not start-up normally. It shows a mouse pointer against a black screen but nothing further.
-It does not have any restore points for some reason (I am fairly positive I have used a restore point several months ago so its very unusual that it is gone)
- The only way I am typing this is by pressing F8 at the bootup and selecting "load using last successful reboot" (I use windows vista home premium 32 bit)
-Firefox 3.52 does not seem to load anymore (I'm using 3.0)
-Thunderbird does not seem to load either now

I am not even going to ask how to fix this because I am sure it is complicated. What I want to know is... where is a good place to take it to get it fixed? I don't want to go to best buy and have the geeksquad charge money to reformat the drive. I want someone to FIX it.

Thanks for anny help

Define "fix" for us.

If you want to format and start over, we can tell you how.

If you want to try to recover your current installation we can try to help, provided your virus problem is taken care of. There are some good online scanners, such as Free ESET Online Antivirus Scanner and HouseCall - Trend Micro USA .
