Default Vista won't recognize drives.

Vista won't recognize my optical drives. The BIOS does however.

I tried uninstalling both drives, and then when it tries to reinstall them, it says that it fails. I also downloaded the driver, and tried two separate ways to install it. The first, is running the exe. That just tells me that there are no drives. I also tried to update the driver though Device Manager, but Vista tells me that the driver is current, and it won't let me install it that way either.

Any help?

Hello,

Try uninstalling the device from the device manager then restarting. See if it will find new hardware and isntall the drivers then. If not try using Driver Cleaner Pro to remove the drivers and then restart and install the new set you downloaded.

Cheers,
Mak

If I remember right, there's a registry problem that sometimes causes this. Do you have iTunes installed? Try uninstalling it, and see if your drives appear then. I found this out after a while of searching while working on a client's Vista machine. I'll try to find the webpage I used....but it was a while ago lol.

Edit: did a quick google and Apple has a troubleshoot page...I believe this is what I had to do: Optical drives not recognized in Windows Vista after installing iTunes 7

Try going to Windows Update and choosing the extra hardware updates.
Windows Update is really good about finding drivers for even the most obscure hardware. It usually gets a generic driver designed to work with an array of hardware.

That registry tweak got it. Thanks a lot man. I hate iTunes, but my sister needs it for her iPod. At least I won't have to deal with iTunes once my computer gets here.

Thanks to Mak, Silver, and lazer as well for their suggestions.

No problem, glad that worked. Figured that was the culprit . BTW, there are other apps out there that work for an iPod.

Yeah, I know. My sister doesn't though. And even if I showed her how to use them, she would still use iTunes.
