are you required to activate xp before upgrading to vista?

Yes. It also must pass the WGA or Vista upgrade will not work.

why cant you buy the OEM, if ur running a illegitimate copy of XP then buy the OEM, you don't have to have xp activated to install it plus its much cheaper than upgrade versions,

if your running xp on the machine in ur sig id get a gig of ram just to be safe, 1GB RAM is probably the minimum IMO

Heres another mistake of vista
DailyTech - Workaround Discovered For "Clean Install" With Vista Upgrade DVDs

This will show you how to do a clean install of vista even if you only have the upgradable version.

Yes there is the option of using the Upgrade DVD to do a clean install. I was just answering the qeustion asked.

would it potentially be easier to upgrade to vista from windows 2000 since there is no activation like in xp?
