The only real option you would have if a sector becomes corrupt it to run Check Disk with the /r /f parameters. This will not only do a full scan but try to repair them as well.

I just ran a full disk check with the SpinDisk program and there were no errors and no sectors fixed. I ran the windows one and another one from TuneUp Utilities and they all came clean. If it's not the HDD what else can it be?

Do you have any restore points to a time before this started to happen? Maybe restore to then and see if you can fix Office there.

Maybe one of these 2 pages will be of help to get Office Removed from your system and get Office back on.

But from the sounds of it something else is up.

Do you have multiple profiles on this machine? Do you have the hidden Admin account unlocked?

If so go into one of those accounts and see if the behavior is exhibited. If it isnt then it is a account specific issue.

So I did a full reformat and while I was installing some programs the PC rebooted all of the sudden with no warning, no freeze, no BSOD. So now I am really starting to think it might be the HDD. Should I start a new post?

Naw we can work right here. I know the situation and everyone can read up on it.

IF it just shut down like that it would be a few things.

First heat. Be it CPU or GPU (Processor or Graphics Card)
2nd Bad HDD. (Less likely than heat)
3rd Bad Cable on one of 2 said devices. (GFX Card and HDD)

I would start at the top. Use RealTemp, CoreTemp and some others out there to see what your temps are. From the sound of it i would say CPU Temp under load is high.

Post Re: Vista Icons gone bad

Just a few days ago I changed the stock heatsink with a Zerotherm BTF 95, plus I added another fan on top of it and the CPU stays cool as it can be. The VGA came with two big copper heatsinks and I never had any problem with heat in the past. And if it was heat, the computer would shut down completely, not restart.

So now that we can put that theory away. When I exchanged the heatsink, I slso checked all cables and took out all the dust between fans, heatsink fins, etc. So I am pretty sure that it's not a bad or lose cable.

I don't think it's the operating system either, because I never had any problems running Vista Ultimate for the last couple of years and all my hardware was compatible, plus I was doing a clean install.

As far as the HDD goes, I already did some heavy testing and nothing came up. Before I assume it's the HDD and start talking to WD about returning it, I want to make sure. Are there any more tests I can do to find out? So far I did SpinDisk, Tuneup Utilities disk check and the default windows one.

So after a fresh install from almost two weeks ago, I was browsing the web when the PC restarted unexpectedly. Can I assume at this point that it's the HDD? What else can I test?
