Default Vista 64-bit home premium optimizing question

first off i just want to say ive searched the forums but didnt find results i was comfortable with, if i missed something, im very sorry! oh and by the way thank you for all help, you guys rock

I have just upgraded my machine from Windows XP 32bit to Windows Vista64-bit home premium (oem). and i have installed all updates and have SP1

my machine specs:
AMD Dual Core 4800+ w/ ab1t sli mobo
4 GB Corsair RAM
2xSLi 8800 GT's
X-Fi Sound Card (Xtreme Music)
600 watt psu

anyways, I'm familiar with MSCONFIG, and disabling programs under msconfig, startup tab, and im also familair with how to disable antivirus and spyware programs (im actually only using windows fiewall and defender atm, but ill get what i need later)

i was wondering, other than disabling the loadup apps, Windows Search under the services tab,[this is in msconfig of course!] disabling sleep/hibernation mode, disabling system restore software, re-adjusting power settings, disabling windows media player from downloading contente when i dont want it to and disabling the vista default themes (im running everything in classic view)

i was wondering what else can i do to speed up my computer?

is my computer running slow?
no... not at all, but i know i can make it faster...
any suggestions?

...im ok with computers, just never really got familiar with vista untill now.

thank you for any help!

-Mark

The only thing you could do would be to turn off indexing, shadow copies and restore points. That would be the last thing you could do to get any more speed out of the system.

Volume Shadow Copy is the Shadow Copy one.

Indexing is done differently. Sorry brain fart.

Disable Windows Search Service

This method effectively stop and disable all search indexing processes, and is the recommended way.

1.Click on Start button, then select Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools, and double click on Services applet. Alternatively, simply type “Services” (without quotes) in Start Search box.
2.If User Account Control asks for permission, click Continue.
3.Locate an service named Windows Search. Right click on Windows Search, and then select Properties on contextual menu.
4.Click on Stop button to stop the indexing service immediately.
5.On the Startup Type dropdown box, select Disabled.
6.Click on OK button.
To re-enable the Windows Seearch, simply change back the Startup Type.

Disable Indexing on Drives

This method allows users to selectively disable indexing on certain drives which rarely used or searched. However, it may take a long time to apply new attributes to all files, folders and sub-folders to exclude them from indexing.

1.Open Windows Explorer from Accessories.
2.Right click on the drive (or drive letter) that you want to turn off the indexing.
3.Select Properties on the contextual menu.
4.Unselect (untick) the Index this drive for faster searching option.

5.Click Apply or OK button.
To re-include the drive, simply select the option again.

Indexing Options Remove or Exclude Indexed Locations in Control Panel

This method does not turn off indexing service. Instead, it just excludes deselected folders from search index, or deselect folders from included list. The indexer processes may still run after you remove or exclude everything.

1.Click on Start button.
2.Click on Control Panel.
3.Click on System and Maintenance.
4.Click on Indexing Options.
5.To remove an Included Location, simply click on Modify button, and then untick the checkbox for respective folders under the “Change selected locations” box. To remove indexing on Start Menu and/or Users folder, click on “Advanced” button at Indexing Options dialog or “Show all locations” in Indexed Locations dialog. UAC access request continue required. Click on Start Menu and Users once at “Summary of selected locations” box if you do not see the checkbox for them.

To re-enable, simply tick back the folders.

There really isnt much else you can do. You can try Black Viper's suggestions.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Service Configurations by Black Viper

But i wouldnt advise all of them. Some of them can disable services you need if you are not paying attention to what some of those services are hooked in with.

But really you got everything you can do.

Default Re: Vista 64-bit business

I do not know how to disable antivirus and anti-spyware software. The instructions suggest I get help from the software provider which in this case is software I downloaded from Microsoft. Their help was no help. I can find the security center but there are no tabs to disable. I know how to delete in Programs& Features in Control panel but I just want to disable malware and defender and AVG. I recently purchased Neat 4.0 mobile scanner and can't install it until the disabling is done. I also want to download Java 6.0 and am being blocked by what they suggest is a need to disable the same softwares as Neat requires. Can I get clear simple instructions. If carefully guided I am not afraid to go to the registry and work on things. Thank you.

AVG is not from Microsoft. So that one you will be able to get help for.

AVG Free - FAQ

Defender should be able to be disabled like it shows. Can disable it through the services as well. There is no built in active malware scanner from Microsoft. Unless you are using the Microsoft Security Essentials. The Malware scanner is not a progressive scanner, meaning it is not on all the time. It only scans when you tell it to.
