Is it possible to use a XP install cd to install Windows then use a different cd (and key) to register it? I'm wondering if my XP install problems are coming from my XP install CD (which is really scratched up)...

yes the windows keys arent cd specfic. so you can use a fresh copy to do the install and you dont need the scratched cd for anything, just put in your serial and everything you would do.

Do you think it matters if they are slightly different... i.e. XP Pro, MCE, Home SP2, (or SP1) etc?

a pro key will not work with home, an OEM key will not work with a retail CD and vice versa.
basically it has to be the same version AND the same licence type. I'm pretty sure that which service pack shouldn't matter but i don't know for sure.
I'm pretty sure other licence types have incompatable keys too but i'm not sure about that, i.e. Open licence, select licence, enterprise licence, gov/academic licence, enterprise subscription...

OK, thanks. I'm going to try to borrow another XP cd (which probably wont be compatible with cd... it's a DELL re-install CD) while I order my own cd.

Where can I find Xp cheapest? It's doesn't have to be SP2, I don't mind downloading SP2.

they need to sticky this. different windows require different serials. oem will recognize most serial of either home or pro, but home will never recognize pro and vice versa.

If you're a student I think they do cheaper copies for education, but otherwise you probably want an OEM licence. Most places wont sell these without hardware though (there are exceptions to the rule).
