Emulator is on a distinguished road

Default updating Vista

My laptop is only a few months old but there are a massive 64 important updates to install (OEM must have been preinstalled a while back)

I presume these updates are best installed in a organised order, can I assume that Windows will automatically take care of this.

Also due to Service packs containing previous updates it would be logical to assume that these separate updates have no need to be installed, can I also assume that Windows will recognise this.

Default Re: updating Vista

Yes Windows will install the updates in the proper order. Windows will isntall all updates no matter if they are included in the SP or not. Some are required to be installed before the SP itself. It is just best to let Windows Update work. You may want to check around as well as some updates have been known to cause issues. But it is best to let Window sUpdate do its thing without trying to interact with it much.
