Default Trying to upgrade to Vista 64-bit

So I'm trying to Upgrade to Vista 64-bit. And I booted from the DVD Drive, hit install now, and I got an error message saying "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now."

I recently built this computer and originally installed Windows XP because I wanted to upgrade directly to Vista 64-bit rather than installing Vista 32-bit first.

This morning I was trying to back up some files before installing Vista, and I noticed that I was not able to burn DVDs. I dont have the DVD disk so I went to the Asus website to look for new drivers and there were no new drivers available. I am re-using the same Asus DRW 1608PS3 from my last computer and it worked just fine on there. It will burn CDs but not DVDs.

Any ideas what I should do?

Edit: Not sure if it makes a difference, but Ive been using the 32-bit version of XP.

Going from vista 32bit to 64bit Q

As stated in there. Can NOT upgrade from a 32 Bit OS to a 64 Bit OS. Not possible. can only do a full fresh install. There is differences in the code, kernel and just about everything. Sorry mate. Will have to format and reinstall fresh with Vista 64 Bit if you really want to use it.

You also can't go from XP to Vista without a fresh install either.

OK I understand that. Ive done a fresh install of Windows XP 100 times, but how do I do a fresh install of Vista? I figured it would be the same thing. Just go to the BIOS, boot from the CD and I am on my way. Is that wrong?

It is...just pop in your Vista DVD (assuming a legitimate Microsoft DVD or official MSDN ISO, it should boot fine) and follow the (very easy to use) graphical install prompt.

So even though XP 32-bit is my current OS, I can still just put in the Vista 64-bit disk (and yes it is a legitamate Microsoft DVD) and it will do a completely fresh install?

Edit: Ok, so I tried loading XP 32-bit and just putting the Vista 64-bit disk in and I got an error saying "Setup can not run on this version of the Operating System. To install Windows please try booting from the install media."

False, there are upgrade paths that you can do from XP to Vista. There are many options for XP users to upgrade to vista, just depends on the XP edition you have and the Vista edition you want. You just can't go from 32 bit to 64 bit.

Its OK. Yes. I am ready to do a full reformat, fresh install, whatever you want to call it. My problem is, whether i try to do it by just putting the disk in, or i try to boot from the disk, I get an error message. When I try to boot from the CD the error message reads "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now." If I try to just put the disk in, the error message reads "Setup can not run on this version of the Operating System. To install Windows please try booting from the install media."

Please help.

Where did you get your Vista DVD? Is it an official one you got packaged from Microsoft or is it an ISO you got through a Microsoft MSDN download (such as colleges or businesses offer) and burned to a DVD? If it's one of these, the DVD should be fine.

Also, what kind of DVD-ROM drive are you using (DVD burners work too, obviously)? SATA, IDE, or external? If it's a SATA drive, it may need special drivers.

I bought an official Vista DVD from a store. Unfortunately I didnt realize that it was the 32-bit version of Vista. So, I ordered the 64-bit version from Microsoft for about $10 (using the product Key from the 32-bit version). It took about 10 days but it finally got to me. So now I have 2 disks and both are official Microsoft DVDs.

As far as my DVD drive. Its an Asus DRW 1608P3S. It is attached via IDE cable. It has no issues reading a CD or DVD. And it will also burn CDs. But it will not burn DVDs for some reason. Again, I checked the Asus website and there were no new drivers for the device.
