Default Troubleshooting comp remotely

So my in-laws seem to have a never ending supply or errors and problems with their computer. I was wondering if there is a recommended program that would allow me to access their computer from home to check settings and enable/disable etc....usually with them it's a simple matter of new drivers or messed up settings, or malaware.

Is remote desktop the way to go or is there something better? I've never used remote desktop so just curious as to the extent of control you get over the other computer or if settings and such are off limits.

Thanks,
