Default Trouble with certain videos...

Hi guys, I'm new here and I have been having a problem for several months now. Firstly, in August I performed my yearly reinstallation of windows. However, when I attempted to play videos (mpg, avi, mov you name it) it would cause the computer to slow up over the course of 10 seconds until it finally locks up. This kind of reminds me of a memory leak, but I have no idea how to fix it. Been searching for months for an answer but I cannot seem to find one. Videos in browsers (aka. youtube, and google video) work perfectly fine, but whenever I try to see a video in media player, quicktime, or iTunes it locks up. I reinstalled the computer tonight in case it was some fluke accident, but alas, the problem persists. Any insight as to why it is doing this and how to fix it would be appreciated!

As far as I can tell, yes. I've got the latest nvidia driver from Nvidia's website. I run on Windows XP Professional, and I'm not sure what else I need to download. Any suggestions?
