Default Stupid XP Installation issue gone bad

For some reason, XP installed as F: instead of C: on my old laptop. I went into registry and edited F: to C: how it should be, but now it gets stuck at the Welcome screen (it doesn't say Welcome though, just the blue screen with the XP logo in the middle). It still responds to CD's, drives, etc, and the HDD light occasionally flashes, but it never gets to the Desktop. How do I get the system to work on the C: labeled drive?

The only way i know of is to do a full install again. Maybe a repair install might work.

I'm going to use Wine's Regedit in Linux to edit the registry values back to normal, but I still need to change the drive letter mapping somehow. I've read a few Microsoft articles about it, but it all looks like registry hacks. Good thing is, if I can get Wine's Regedit to work, I won't have to worry about killing the registry.
