I was wondering if anyone can give me some software that would help me as an IT? Im going to computer training academy and the instructors say to have XYZ programs to help in the field. Im halfway through A+ so Im starting to get stuff Im going to need. I plan on getting a 16GB flash drive to have these files & to also back up files of clients while doing maintenance. any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hirens boot cd
A bootable OS

Those two I'd say are the most important bits of software you'll need. Also

CCleaner
Defraggler
an antivirus program

What are some of your instructors' recommendations? We can find you freeware replacements for them.

There is a thread somewhere on here that someone laid out about 15 programs that are suggested that do everything from data recovery to virus scanning, and all are free programs.

That one's quite useful.. however if you need really specific uses then I'd ask then you'll have the program to suit what you need doing.

during lecture he said to have a boot cd for DOS, 9x, 95, 98, 2000, xp, vista. AV software like AVG. those are the ones I know off the top of my head.

Question: what is a boot CD? is it a licensed version of a software? or is it basically like a barebones version to help 'jumpstart' your OS? and where can I get these?

I know Im a green noob & should prolly know this being half way thru my A+ but I dont. they start looking for jobs for me in like 3-4 months so Id like to gradually pick up things here and there & be comfortable with the gear & software I have! thanks to all of you in advance!

Boot CD is a CD that does just that, boots. Then there are usually tools on that CD that allow you to do a number of things, anywhere from repairing a boot file for an operating system, recover your files or even repartition your drive. They are separate from the OS and allow your computer to boot into a GUI environment right off the CD. It is the same concept that you use when installing windows. Your have a .ISO file that a computer can boot off, but instead of installing windows these CD's allow you to do a number of different things.

The one I use most often is GParted and Linux Live CD. Both are free and come in a .ISO file (meaning they boot without use of the OS). At that point I can repartition drives (GParted) or pull information off of a damaged drive (Linux live CD). There is another one that is useful in repairing boot files for Vista and XP but I can't remember the name - i have it just can't remember the name of it since I rarely use it.

All of these are free.
