Default Re: Service Pack vs. Updates

What happend to you is simple really.. you had updates set to install and you were up to date.. then you installed a cab file that contained the updates your computer already had installed.. this will give you the BSOD.. and at that point a format and reinstall is all you can do.

So don't stop using updates.. just install the service packs through MS updates... or just install the service packs on a fresh install.. thats always best..

Hampton, Vista is setup so that it will not install updates that are not needed/already installed. To prove it, open Windows Update, check for a KB # and go download it. Try to install it. You will see that Windows Vista prompts you that the update is not needed or already applied. So that couldnt be what happened.

There was a download from updates that after it was installed and someone tried to install service pack 2 afterwards, it would end up causing havock on machines.. MS realized this and fixed that update to not have the confilict with service pack 2 but those lucky ppl that downloaded that particuliar update had no way to uninstall that particuliar update.. I was one of them.. this is when MS first offered SP2 through updates.

Yes but as you said, that is when SP2 was first offered. That was over 6 months ago. That was found and resolved before the OP installed SP2 for Vista on their machine.

So then why did I get the black screen after I installed it? My PC is pretty new (built in June), and was fine until this incident...

Now I'm trying to figure out what happened even tho the update bug was resolved 6 months ago as you said. It's asking me again to install SP2, and I really am reluctant to do so, but as you said it's a good idea not to ignore them.

The Black screen can be caused by all sorts of things. A bad update that adversly affects the system. could be the dreaded KSoD or Black Screen of Death. Could jsut be that explorer.exe did not execute and needed to be manually started.

I cant really answer why it happened. As there are so many factors that go into it. You best option would be to have your Vista disk handy so you can use a restore point. Create a Restore point right now, before you install SP2. If you get the Black Screen again you can use a Restore point that you created before the install of SP2 and get your system back.

How to create a restore point in Windows Vista:
How to create a restore point

Recovering the Vista Bootloader from the DVD - NeoSmart Technologies Wiki
At step 2 choose the option "System Restore"

That way you have something to fall back on without having to reinstall the OS again.
