Default Repair XP on external HDD?

I got a laptop here with a corrupt Windows file. It requires me to do a repair. I tried to by the CD but it doesn't work, as always. I don't even have the option for it.

Instead what I'm trying to do is I'm using a "magic box" USB bridge to plug in this laptop hard drive with the corrupt file to my laptop. Then I'd like to put the XP CD in my laptop and force a repair to the USB drive.

Is that possible? Or am I thinking too far ahead?

It might work if it can find the Windows install on the External Drive.

Windows does not like external/usb drives and refuses to install on them at least with Vista and win 7, I have never tried XP tho so you may have to do it internally on a dif machine.

I think it's a lost cause anyway. I think it's more of a hardware failure with the drive as opposed to a simple corrupt file. The drive makes a weezing sound and due to lack of being able to explore it, both with another XP Pro computer and Ubuntu computer, I'm beginning to fail it's FUBAR'd.

Setting up a spare laptop now for her... thanks for the input!!

There are ways to get Windows Vista on a External. But they are not recommended. Windows XP does not have that limitation put on it. Windows 7 will not allow for it to be installed on a External device either.
