Default Reinstalling XP with new CD drive problems

A few days ago, when booting up my computer, it got stuck at the "Windows is starting up..." screen, and wouldn't advance past that. I tried to run the tests in setup and such. and all of them passed. I decieded to just try and reinstall windows XP with the operating system CD. However, my stock disc drive is broken, so I bought a new CD-DVD drive. I installed it, and it seems to work fine, but when I boot the computer up it does not go to the Windows XP setup screen. Is there a problem because I haven't installed a driver for the CD drive? Help would be appreciated, I really need to get the computer working.

it boots all the way up to the "windows is starting up..." screen, and then freezes. It acts as if the disc isnt in at all.

The disc might be scratched. Try another CD-ROM drive or a disc cleaner.

oh i c what your saying when booting off the OS cd. ok just check the disk for scratches and if that doesnt help try a new cd drive and test the one you have now in another system before trashing it.
