Default Reinstalled Windows XP (40 GB HDD showing only 6 GB)

I just reinstalled Windows XP on a computer. It reconizes the full 40 GB of the harddrive but says only 6 GB are free. How are only 6 GB free on basically a brand new computer.

I chose to overwrite the existing windows and install on the same partition. Please help me out.

Well, if you chose to overwrite the existing windows and install on the same partition, then it's not basically a brand new computer. You have all of the programs and information you had on the computer before you reinstalled windows.
Check out the c:\
Specifically in the "program files" folder.

Did you format before you installed the new XP? If not then all the old ifo is still there. Which would accoutn for why you have only 6GB free.
