Default Realtime monitoring software?

I am working on a report that is due soon on real time monitoring software that could be used by a parent to control and or monitor their chidrens internet/e-mail and chat usage. I've found a commerically avaible product to write about but now I need something that is free to write about.

Any and all input is appreciated.

I would recomend Squid Which is an open source proxy program. It will monitor everything that goes to the internet.
