Default Programs and Partitions

Here's what I'm trying to do. I want to cut my hard drive into 3 partitions:

1: Windows Vista Installation
2: Windows XP Installation
3: All programs and files

But I'm not sure if this is possible. Will I be able to run my programs on both Vista and XP? I don't know anything about Registry, so I'm not sure if programs need registry entries to run or not. If so, then I wouldn't be able to use a program in both OSs right? Does anyone know if this setup will work or not?
