Default Problems compress video

I am trying to compress a 1.1GB .avi file so I can upload it to the youtube however I am having problems doing so. Movie maker makes the colours go all weird and any video converter makes the video go really fast yet the audio is fine. Is this becuase I am compressing it to too small a file?

I know literally nothing about video to be honest, and I have tried the programs on the recomeneded software but have had no joy.

If someone could point me in the right direction... that would be great

Cheers.

I believe that if you try to upload it to YouTube anyway, they will compress it for you to fit to their standards.
