| Is it possible to run apps from hard drive with different partitions? Say you have two hard drives, one for OS and one for everything else. The OS HD has two partitions, Vista and XP. Is it possible for you to install programs on the second HD using XP, then run them with Vista? I remember I tried this with a game and it didn't work, there is no program/hack to make this possible? |

| Re: Is it possible to run apps from hard drive with different partitions? The ONLY way it will work is if the program is a stand alone, like a portable application. Something like a Game or Office would NOT work. The reason is because the Registry information, application data and much more is not installed on the 2nd OS and as such it cant be run.
Meaning if you installed Microsoft Office in XP you would not be able to use it from Vista because you dont have the proper information within Vista to run it. It would require you to install it within Vista to use Office.
Almost all games it will not work cause they have information that is stored in the Registry not to mention where teh app data and save data is.

| Re: Is it possible to run apps from hard drive with different partitions? Wouldn't it be great if games and apps allowed you to specify a folder to save all your files? I hate the fact I have to search for a save game to back it up, they are in different places every time, if they were all in one location it would be no problem installing the same game on different partitions, as long as the saves/files were in one place. Would also benefit if you need to format, just detach the HD with valuable info and format/reinstall the other. |

There is in fact a standardised filesystem hierarchy unimaginatively called the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard Filesystem Hierarchy Standard not really going to work with the way windows does things but makes for interesting reading.
