the computer is 228 MB of RAM...that is not enough for XP...how does it run Longhorn???

I suppose, I have things like Gtalk, iTunes, and I'm using a VAIO at the mo, so a shed load of random Sony things that like to clog up the system!

have the thread starter post a screenie of the processes tab. then we can identify which process(es) are eating up the memory. click the processes column header twice to sort the column in decending order; biggest at top.
