Default Override user permission when taking backup?

My laptop mother board burnt out recently. I needed to take bk up of my disk drive....connected laptop HDD to my desktop using a conversion kit (IDE to USB), I am able to see laptop HDD on my vista machine now but when I try to copy 'My Documents' (from laptop HD), I get an error saying that I do not have permission to access this folder...please help:
- How can I access the required folders and take back up onto vista machine

Thanks
