Default New Software

I'm a complete noob when it comes to computers but I'm trying to learn and have been doing a lot of research and planning for a first build soon. But first I was looking for a rough estimate of all the software I would need when it is assembled. I have an OS and don't need to worry about word processing or anything like that. I was just worried because all of the store bought pcs have so much preloaded software that I don't want to build my computer and not be able to do anything with it. So in terms of software, what will I need? I'm sure you guys will need more info, I'll be happy to give it out just let me know....thanks!

Well, what are you wanting to do? That's the biggest question. We can't really give you an answer as to "what software you will need" because we ourselves don't know what you need.

An operating system, updated drivers and system monitoring software (PC Wizard 2008, Everest, CPU-Z, Core Temp, Whatever you choose, and burn in programs if you are thinking about overclocking). That's the only NEEDED software for building, when I build.

What about an AV? Media codecs? Messenger clients? A different browser (including add-ons)?

There's more than those things that you listed that are "needed."

Each persons needs are different. I dont NEED any of the tools listed above. I do NEED notepad++, Opera, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, CDBurnerXP, ImgBurn, ConvertxtoDVD, GOM Player, WinAmp and many more. As those i use everyday.

Each person has their own unique requirements as to what software they need as they have different needs that have to be met. Starting to learn to web code i need the browsers to test the code and make sure it works. I need the burning programs cause i use them with my ISO's i download. I need GOM player to watch videos.

So everyone has different needs. There are tons of topics around here where people suggest software for certain tasks. Unlike the main thread i created there are thousands more. It is just if you find software to meet your needs.

So tell us what you are looking to do and we can suggest paid or free software to do it. Until then you will get such a varied opinion on it cause people have different needs than you.

Ok thats pretty much what I expected. Well the computer will primarily be used for internet/email but I still want it to be capable of burning cds/dvds as well as handle music/movies/videos. I'm not looking for the obvious software like things that aren't really needed I'm just looking for the things an average person would miss when setting up a new computer.

Again it is different people with different needs.

DirectX Runtimes is something that i would suggest. Used for gaming.
Silverlight for use with Microsoft and its sites.
Adobe Flash
Adobe Shockwave Player
Sun Java

those are some things that i would say would be missed. As 4 of them are directly related to internet use.

K-lite Codec Pack for media usage is one I'd suggest. Can use WMP to play pretty much anything then.
