Default network connection disappeared!

I had some problems installing a new video card. They were resolved, but then I found that my 'local area connection' had disappeared from the 'network connections' window. XP did not even recognize that my ethernet connection existed.

After some efforts to repair the situation, XP sent me a warning that it was now invalid because of the large number of hardware changes I had made! Of course I can't revalidate xp because I can't connect to the internet anymore.

Is this problem familiar to anyone?
