I opened up msconfig and disabled all the startups and the non-microsoft services. Then I renabled them. however, not all programs start up now, at least I don't think they do.

For Zone alarm, zlclient.exe is open according to task manager but the icon does not appear in the system tray. XP does not even detect a firewall on.
Same thing with the Nvidia icon in the system tray

What is wrong with my computer? please help!

So you disabled them and now after enabling them you dont see the icons? Have you checked to make sure that the services are started up? Not jsut the stuff under Startup but the services as well. You did say you turned that off as well.

I re-enabled everything. The services and the startups are all enabled. I've tried system restore and that doesn't work for some reason. I've tried disabling and enabling them again but they still don't work.

Are the services showing up as started under the task manager? If so it is just the Icon not being enabled but the services are.

kaspersky is, and I'm guessing rundll32.exe is the nvidia thing. The kaspersky icon shows up because for some reason I could not turn off kaspersky. the nvidia and zone alarm do not show up though.

zone alarm doesn't even work anymore. I can't open it at all
