Default Mscd001 missing?

I know "Mscd001" is just the name of the cd driver and mscdex.exe is the load comand.
I keep getting the "CDR101: drive reading not ready message", i've tried loading a new driver off a floppy but i may be typing the wrong command.
I've even tried using a different CD drive getting the same message.

The reason i'm trying a fresh install is i believe i got a worm that messed with my MBR, and the normal dos command to clear/rebuild the MBR is useless atm.

Used/Using 98 boot disk to assist install.

If ANYONE has any helpfull information on how to fix this problem so i can do a fresh XP install please enlighten.

ALL helpfull information is appreciated.
