Default Microsoft Word Banned in U.S.

Don't know if this has been posted or if anyone has seen this yet. Was in November Maximum PC. Seems old but yeah..

Texas Judge Says Microsoft Can't Sell Word | Maximum PC

Quote:
A Texas Judge on Tuesday ordered Microsoft to stop "selling or importing to the United States any Microsoft Word products that have the capability of opening .XML, .DOCX, or .DOCM files (XML files) containing custom XML." The injunction is the result of a complaint filed by Toronto-based i4i alleging Microsoft of violating its 1998 patent (No. 5,787,449) on a method for reading XML.

Plus it is not true anymore. They already got the injunction so they can sell Word.

Microsoft Granted Motion to stay Word Injunction | WebProNews
Microsoft Dodges Office Word Sales Injunction - At least temporarily - Softpedia
Microsoft Granted Stay on Injunction on Selling Word | GottaBeMobile.com
Microsoft wins injunction to continue selling Word - Software - Technology - News - iTnews.com.au

There are plenty more. Bad thing about reading it in a magazine. It is old. The injunction was granted back in Sept 4, 2009. Why would they put that in a Nov issue when it is not true anymore.

Patents are stupid. Did microsoft infringe, or was the patent too broad or something?

This was about the Custom XML file. At least from what i remember. Basically the patent is so generic or vague in its expression that it covers just about every document out there in every format. It is jsut because Microsoft use the .XML extension that this was brought about. I read about it back when it first happened.
