I know they're not intended to be severed, but I was having issues way worse than what I'm dealing with now. Don't get me wrong, it's much more efficient this way and it fixed the problems I was having... but, there are some aesthetic and functional issues that are pretty standard but unnecessary and not having them is more of an annoyance than a real problem.
Thanks though, this answered my question. It's a problem I can live with; I just wanted to know if there was any way to reverse it in the event the cons start to outweigh the pros.
