Default Microsoft .net framework 1.1

Ok folks here's my questions.
Captain ADD and I decided the other night that we were gonna get service packs and I saw the Microsoft .net framework. So i added it to the list, and applied it.

The question i have is this: what is the purpose of .net? I've gone through it and seen nothing really mind-bending.
