by removing the battery, you reset your cmos settings back to the factory defaults.
if the default setting is to have a bios password, then it will be set as the default password. You are prompted for a bios password, if one is enabled, during the machine's POST. This password is not managed by the OS.
i should have known better than to post the quote stating you'll need to shell out 150 bucks. There's another alterantive to pulling the battery. You mobo should have a three prong jumper that is used to reset the cmos as well; see bios docs.
