Default Linux/Windows dual boot

I have an HP dv5000t. The hard drive is 76GB total, with 9 GB used as recovery space. It has Win XP installed, and I want to install a Linux system to dual boot with it. The problem I am having is creating the partition for Linux and a FAT32 swap file. How would I do this?

I also have another question. The processor is a duo core 1.83 GHz. When I use PC Wizard it tells me that the processor is running at 980MHz. I am guessing that that is each core running at 980MHz, right?

Simply put, it's two processors, each 1Ghz.
